Opinions On... Opinions

If you guys really know me, you'll probably know that I'm not one to go around proclaiming my opinions all the time. This is mainly to save friendships and avoid confrontation. For some reason, most people react negatively when presented with an opinion different from theirs. This fact both confuses and frustrates me. #thestruggle

Anyways, I've decided that today, I will put aside the fear and share a couple of my own opinions.

The first of these is One Direction's latest single, "Steal My Girl".
I do not like this song.

While it's been met with all the hype and excitement I'm sure the band was hoping for *cough* expecting *cough*, I don't feel like anybody's really taken the time to try to understand the song.

This song is almost pretty much blatantly sexist.

The lyrics to the chorus are :

Everybody wanna steal my girl
Everybody wanna take her heart away
Couple million in the whole wide world
Find another one
'Cause she belongs to me

Wait a minute. What was that? She belongs to you? I'm sorry, I thought that women were their own individual people. My mistake.

She's not a dog. She's a person. She does not belong to you. You do not own her.

Also, what's with that "couple million in the whole wide world, find another one" line? That's really painting the picture that women are all part of some generic group of things here for men to pick and choose from. I'm afraid that's not the case, guys.

Alright, alright, enough of letting my inner feminist claw its way out.

Let's talk about people. Specifically those I mentioned at the beginning of this post, the kind who completely bash someone's opinion because it's different from theirs.

Dan Howell, a very very popular YouTuber, recently posted a video sharing his thoughts on these kind of people. I won't post it here, but it's really worth a watch. (Dan's channel name is danisnotonfire. The video I'm talking about is titled "OPINIONS.")

In the video, Dan opens with the statement, "It's okay to express opinions, as long as you're not a jerk about it." Extremely important point!

Dan goes on to talk about how most people express their opinions in ways like, "I like [insert musical group] and they're great and everything about them is perfect and if you don't like them I HATE YOU AND YOU ARE WRONG." If you try to state your opinion, they probably react like this:

What people who share their thoughts in this way don't realize is that opinions are subjective not objective. The definition of the word is, "A subjective view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge."

Your opinions are not the final say, they are not law.

People having different opinions is what makes the world we live in diverse and beautiful and interesting, which is why we should not overreact and discourage others' views.

It is good to be different from other people! It is good when other people are different from you! This is what makes you an individual! Your originality is what makes you your own person! Wow!

It just kind of baffles me how many people are so closed-minded when it comes to viewpoints other than their own. Idk man.

I'm probably rambling by now, so I'll finish this off.
If you actually read this entire post, thank you. It felt really good to share.

I leave you with a question. What do you think?

One Day. . .

Right now, I'm in a really good mood for various reasons. Now, some of you may not know this, but when I'm in a good mood, most of the time it leads me to start thinking about weddings. Don't ask.

Anyways, today's post will be a list of songs that I want played at my wedding, that remind me of weddings, etc.

Without further ado, here is my completely typical white girl dream wedding soundtrack.

1. Maroon 5 ft. Gwen Stefani - "My Heart is Open"

"Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes." (✿◠‿◠)

2. Sleeping At Last - Turning Page

Wow wow wow wowie wow wow. I love this song maybe too much. His voice, the lyrics, wow. Listen. Just listen.

3. Hudson Tayor - You're Not Alone

Okay so I've been a fan of Hudson Taylor since way back before all the hair gel and tours and expensive jackets and #1 singles on BBC Radio, since they were just Harry and Alfie in their living room singing Mumford and Sons with cheap mics and cheap guitars so it makes me really happy to know how far they've come and to go back and listen to all these old songs and the lyrics awe.

4. Avril Lavigne - I'm With You

Ngl, it's actually kind of a dream of mine to have Avril sing this live at my wedding can't you imagine a perfect first dance um

5. John Mayer ft. Katy Perry - Who You Love

That's it for this one! Hope you liked the list, and that my good mood rubs off on you.

DIY of the Month . . .

So. I've decided that once a month, I'll post a quick lil DIY project here, complete with instructions and pictures the whole shebang (Is it shibang? Shabang? Should I just not use the word at all? I'm at a total loss here, guys.)

This month, I'll be explaining how to make your own tattoo chokers. These were a huge trend in the 90's and they're coming back in a big way. They look super cute, plus they're really fun and easy to make wow!!1!

Materials :

- 1mm or thicker stretchy beading cord (e.g. Stretch Magic, available at Walmart)

- Binder clip

- Scissors

- Hard surface (e.g. book, binder, table, etc.)

- Clear nail polish

*Optional* Small silver charm

Step 1 :

Measure your cord to arm's length. It's also a good idea to leave a little extra after this, to make it easier to finish. Once you've measured your cord, use the scissors to cut it.

Step 2 :

Fold the cord in half and secure the folded part to a hard surface using the binder clip. It should look like the picture below.

Step 3 :

We're ready to start our choker! To do this, first take one side of the cord and loop it over the other, pulling it up to the top near the binder clip. It's a little hard to explain this step in words, so refer to the diagram below. The blue, or left side of the cord loops over first, followed by the red, or right side. Repeat this until you've reached the end of your cord. Remember, it's very important keep the loops consistent!

Step 4 :

Once you've finished looping, remove the choker from the binder clip, making sure to hold the open end tight. Now is a good time to measure the choker around your neck to ensure a nice fit. Finish the choker by tying the two ends together and applying a clear nail polish over the knot to further secure it. After the polish dries, you're done! Here's what the finished product should look like.

BONUS STEP!

If you think your choker needs some accessorizing of its own, add a charm to it! Make sure it's not too big, as this will overpower the delicate design of the necklace. Here are some ideas.

Alrighty, that's all for this week. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. If you try it out, comment below and send me pictures!
